Funny Car Chaos!- A blast to the past!
If you are anything like me you have often wondered what it would be like to have lived in the golden age of drag racing. To see drivers like Don “the Snake” Prudhomme, Bill “Grumpy” Jenkins, Don Garlits or Mickey Thompson thunder down the track in their weapon of choice. To see the building blocks that made drag racing what it is today.
This last weekend I had the opportunity to attend Funny Car Chaos. A racing event that featured nostalgic funny cars, hot rods, gassers, super stock and my favorite slingshot dragsters. The smell of nitro and race fuel filled the air that cool crisp spring morning as race teams readied their cars for competition later that day. Every ticket is a pit-pass at drag racing events, so we walked the pits watching all the hustle and bustle of setting up each dragster.
At 11:30 am just as it was approaching time to begin racing every race car cracked to life simultaneously, creating a thunderous roar that could be heard for miles. As the racing began I watched hot rod, super stock, and gasser classes take their turns down the track. With the passing of each class, I could feel my heart pound in anticipation. Then came slingshot dragsters roaring down the track with rolling burnouts and all the action I had hoped for.
Finally, it was the time everyone was waiting for The Funny Cars! These are nitro burning, tire eating handsful of controlled chaos. With an extremely low weight and over 3000 horsepower, they are scary fast. Standing next to the track each time one of these cars blasts by it takes your breath away. Without a doubt, all your senses are feeling the most exhilarating nostalgia racing possible. Now if you think it couldn’t be any more authentic, Roland “the Hawaiian” Leong was there as a crew chief for one of the cars. It just doesn’t get any better than that! The racing was top notch, the cars were amazing and the atmosphere of this great racing event went well beyond what any drag racing fan could ask for. I would like to thank Mo-Kan Dragway and Funny Car Chaos for putting on one of the most memorable events I have been to. If you ever get the chance to attend a nostalgic don’t let it slip away.
